The movie Mean Girls came out in 2004 and hit very close to home for most adolescent girls. Even though the movie was a comedy, there were truths behind many aspects of it. Bullying exists all over and effects every age group, gender, ethnicity, and religion. Mean Girls had scenes in it that involved sex, drugs, alcohol, cursing, violence, harassment, and disrespect. The things those girls did both at home and in their high school are completely unrealistic and gave horrible ideas to teen viewers. Adolescents are incredibly influenced by what they watch. They tend to act out what they view in video games, movies, or TV shows. Relational aggression is a bullying type that attacks a persons social status. This form of aggression is extremely high in Mean Girls. Relational aggression is not typically violent but it can scar people emotionally. There are an incredible amount of teen suicides due to constant bullying and harassment. The bully’s find torturing people’s mental state to be amusing and enjoy seeing people suffer, which is sort of sadistic in a way. Adolescence is a rough time for anyone because of the awkward component. Some people are easier targets than others and some are also more vulnerable to the bullying and it affects them on a much more severe level. Things get as bad as they do because the parental involvement on both parts are very low. If parents monitored their children’s internet and phone use they would be shocked to find out the things their “innocent” child does. Unfortunately, bullying and media influence are very hard to minimize in adolescence and the only thing that is possible is to spread the word and have anti-bullying assemblies. Informing parents and teachers are also very good steps to take in order to decrease further horrors associated with bullying.

The Invisible War

I went to see the movie “The Invisible War” on Tuesday night for class. Needless to say I was extremely upset by this movie. It was an eye-opener. I served in the United States Air Force and received an honorable discharge. I’m proud that I served my country, but I’m not proud of the way that the military treats its women soldiers. They are there for the same reason that the men are, not to be just like a man or to be one of the guys. Women have the same “urge” to serve their country as men do. Women don’t fight for their country so they can expect to get sexually abused, harassed or raped. They fight or serve for the distinction that it gives them. For the Court to tell these women that they should expect to be raped, is an truly disgusting. I can honestly say that I know how it felt to be sexually harassed, but unlike these strong women soldiers, I was not as strong as them at the time it occurred. I let it go, even though it made me feel like I was a piece of garbage. The person that did this, also did this to other women. After I got out, I found out that they were trying to court-martial him, but he retired before it could happen. Everyone in the United States needs to understand that this is not acceptable, and it needs to STOP!!!!

Food for thought- A juxtaposition of two States

Recently on my FB page a “liked friend” of mine, War Sport Industries, LLC, posted an article originating from the Fox News Network concerning recent legislation written in part by New York’s Governor Andrew Cuomo. This new legislation is extremely intrusive into citizen’s 2nd Amendment right’s to keep and bear arms, however, that is not the only argumentative aspect of these new laws that New York’s citizens are up in arms about (no pun intended). Equally so, it is the manner and time frame in which these new laws were written and voted upon. Of those in opposition of this new legislation one Robert Schulz has seemingly taken on the role of spokesmen and head advocate for the people of New York. Mr. Schulz who is not a lawyer, believes the manner in which this new legislation was passed “violated Article III, Section 14 of the New York Constitution by misstating the facts in his message of necessity in order to ram the NY SAFE Act through the Senate and Assembly in a matter of hours. There was no legitimate need for speed… .” This article written on the Fox News website (totally in my opinion alone) was close to a cut and paste job, of an article written for Lohud.com. LoHud.com is a news source for the lower Hudson valley of New york. Lohud’s article was published March 1st, 2013, while Fox’s was stolen, I mean written, the very next day.

Additionally, while our State, which is arguably the most stringent on gun laws, chips away at it’s states citizen’s constitutional rights, other states, Georgia to be specific, are making it mandatory for it’s citizens to be armed. Now, it is unclear whether this law applies to the entire state or specifically to the single town of Kennesaw. Either way, it is interesting to see how some localities embrace our nation’s rights, while others wish to erode them.
